Its true to say that some species of Bee are more threatened than honeybees – however when we dig deeper into the many threats to honey bees, such as Asia Hornets, varroa destructor mite, and use of Neonicotinoid class insecticides, we see this is just the start. There are more threats and new ones and these are symptoms of a much wider problem that encompass other species. So the argument that the honey bees are not endangered is a shallow one – the biggest ally to other species is humans that are educated often from a young age about the environmental challenges we face – big issues that will and do already affect our food chain and survival. Beekeepers can help bring this education from programs that the BBKA run, to awareness about other species for example where not to put a bee hive because of local species.
